A Mighty Fish Story

It’s been a long day. I was up at 5 and went fishing. Me, and 6 more tough and rough fishermen. It was still dark. And cold. The last time I went fishing I was 8 years old. As I caught a fish it startled me so much that I fell into the water. At the age of 10 I was caught myself; a vicious hook found its way into my right eyelid. A few more millimeters and I would have been blind at one eye. Dad took me to the doctor and he yanked it out. I didn’t cry.

So today I found myself at the waterside again with a fishing rod. The knowledgeable fishermen exchanged their wisdom and I nodded to all that they were so willing to share. So I threw that line and hook! Ferociously! Again and again. Two giant fish took the bait but they escaped me. Man against Fish! Fish against Man! I fought as if it was the white whale Moby Dick and he taunted me. Laughed at me! And I had to let go.

Several hours later I was home with a headache. I went to bed…, woke up. What happened? I fished? Did I catch any? No. And glad I didn’t. I like fish. Finding Nemo is one of my fave movies! I’m no fisherman! Still, I had a nice time. With people I didn’t know. I liked the serenity, the silence, the fresh air, the comradeship and the morning sun. Did I feel like a fish out of the water? Yes I did. I’m a musician; Overly sensitive. A Romantic who likes Art, babies, music, cute animals. I cry watching commercials. But I loved getting out there and do something completely different. Getting out of the comfort zone. And making grand adventures out of little things.

Revisiting Vangelis – 1492 – Conquest Of Paradise

While webbing the net for analogue synthesis, I stumbled on Vangelis once again.

So I listened to some of his work. Started with the album Antarctica, moved on to the soundtrack of one of my all time fave movies Bitter Moon by Roman Polanski and ended up (for now) with 1492 – Conquest Of Paradise.

I’ve seen the film multiple times and always loved the soundtrack but never listened to it by itself. No images, just the soundtrack. And it’s gorgeous.

1492 – Conquest Of Paradise

Early 80’s synth music has been an enormous influence in me becoming a musician; Kitaro, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Tomita… those names. When I was little Harry, the first music that I ever recorded with my Technics SX-K200 home keyboard and Philips 4-Track tape recorder was Kitaro’s Silk Road.

The joy I’ve had with my tape recorder…

Now one would call it ambient music I guess. Back then all I knew is that is was made with synthesizers. And I wanted one!

After hearing Giorgio Moroder, Pete Belotte, Patrick Cowley, Jolley & Swain (Imagination), Bobby -O- Orlando and Depeche Mode, I knew what I wanted to make of myself in life…

Anyway, find 1492 – Conquest Of Paradise and have (another) listen. It’s beautiful. Twenty Eighth Parallel is my fave track. Watch the movie too if you have the chance.

Brand new tracks this Month, with notable contributions by Sascha Beek. To be honest, I’ve
never heard of that name before but with 3 tracks in this episode I’m sure I’ll see that
name again. Though some might say it’s commercial sounding I’d rather say it sounds pleasing to
the ear. There’s a difference you know 😉

Also, long time Prog veteran Moshic is present with 2 tracks as well as another name I’m
not that familiar with: Hilton Caswell. 2 Tracks are his productions.

Now that progressive House Music has become a ‘style’ rather than discovering new grounds
in Electronic Dance Music, I’d have to say I like that style and productions these days
sound really good. Yes, better than ever. Progressive as in ‘Progressive’? No. But who
cares? To my ears it sounds far better than the average cheap thrill ‘EDM’ track. It’s
production values are still intact and there’s depth if you want it. And intrinsic
rhythms, beautiful melodies… It’s all there.

Many thanks to Release Promo Service over in Canada and Bonzai Records, Belgium. And all
artists and labels sending in their music. Buy it and support them if you can.

As an exception I will post the playlist before the start of the show so it’ll be easy to look it up or read it during the show (or when you’ll play it afterwards on friskyradio.com)

So, happy listening and enjoy your early Easter Weekend  🙂

8-Track Mind, March 5, 2015

Today’s episode of 8TM (8-Track Mind) features tunes that have been on heavy rotation more than a decade ago. Sometimes referred to as progressive house’ golden age, the period around the millennium in which these records were released, were of outstanding quality. Both in production value and creativity. Progressive wasn’t really about a style or form of music but was more about attitude and diversity. It could sound melodic or rhythmic, techno-like or tribal, trancy or break-beat based. It didn’t really matter. Whether you were a DJ or a producer, there never was that feeling of being restricted by anything.

So here is Part One of a 2 hour showcase of that sound.Yes, I’ve broadcasted episodes that were recorded at that time, but while I was doing the crates (DJ slang for browsing records), I came across long forgotten tracks and so I decided to share them with you. Some well known, others oozing obscurity.

For instance, 4 tracks in this mix are records that I took back from an Australian tour. Made by great Melbourne based artists like Chris Fresh and Ivan Gough. Did I say 4 tracks? Prolly more as Anthony Pappa’s Therapy Dub of Angel by Goldrush is in there too. And Medway, Luke Chable…, I’ve always been a fan of the Ozzy sounds.

Space Manoeuvres ‘ Stage One is represented here too; a spacy (duh) breakbeat trip on the infamous Hooj Choons label that topped the charts at the time. Hard Hands, one of the first progressive labels, gives us ‘Take Me To The Sound’ by Darkglobe, while Prog Hero James Holden remixes Loki – NCYU.

Loads more so check it out at http://www.friskyradio.com. 8TM is on every 1st Thursday of the Month at 22:00 Amsterdam time.
